State Board of Education Meeting Report - February 2025

The State Board of Education (SBOE) met Feb. 19 and 20, and the board approved rules on education funding, school size, and Georgia’s special needs voucher program. Board members also heard a presentation on a new teacher recruitment initiative.

Teach in the Peach GaDOE has launched a new teacher recruitment initiative,Teach in The Peach. This initiative seeks to provide prospective educators with information on the benefits of teaching in Georgia and show multiple pathways to enter the profession. The Teach in the Peach website will also host school district job information.

Superintendent Report Highlights New Teacher Recruitment Initiative

Superintendent Richard Woods used most of his report to recognize 2024 Georgia Teacher of the Year Christy Todd who presented GaDOE's new teacher recruitment initiative, Teach in the Peach. Todd highlighted the website’s features and resources and reported that many people have already used the site to request information on becoming Georgia teachers. The initiative will also feature a teacher signing day May 6 at the College Football Hall of Fame.


Woods concluded his report with a brief update on GaDOE legislative priorities such as increasing salary steps beyond 21 years. He suggested exempting public school teachers from taxes to help educators afford housing. 


Top Ten Education Issues

Dana Rickman and Matt Smith of the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education (GPEE) presented their Top Ten Issues to Watch in 2025. This annual report highlights major education issues in Georgia and provides research findings and policy suggestions to assist stakeholders in addressing them.

Rickman also provided a brief update on GPEE's CARES Impact Study, which examines the use and impact of Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds and provides suggestions for best practices.


Board Adopts Multiple Rules and Approves others For Comment

The board approved the following rules:


Additionally, the board voted to initiate the rule-making process on Rule 160-7-1-.02 Accrediting Agencies. This rule change seeks to reinforce several accreditation requirements outlined in SB 204 (2023).


The board also voted to post several CTAE standards for public comment:

Troup Middle School Students Sing for SBOE

Several students from Georgia schools were recognized for winning the 2024 Cybersecurity Poster Contest.
