The following topics were discussed during the Georgia Professional Standards Commission’s (GaPSC) monthly meetings on Nov. 8-9, 2023:
Ethics
Laurin Vonada, director of educator ethics, shared a presentation on educators' right to reapply for certification.
An educator who has had their certificate revoked may petition for the right to reapply by showing:
The reason for revocation has ceased to be a factor.
Three years have lapsed since the revocation. If that petition is denied, an additional two years must lapse unless the commission determines otherwise.
The educator must satisfy certification renewal requirements.
An individual who has had their certificate denied may petition for the right to reapply by showing:
The reason for denial has ceased to be a factor.
Two years have lapsed since the denial. If that petition is denied, an additional year must lapse.
The educator must satisfy certification renewal requirements.
The commission found no probable cause to sanction an educator who mistakenly answered “yes” to a question regarding prior disciplinary action on a certification application. The educator disclosed a prior sanction by the GaPSC when the question did not require him to do so.

The Educator Preparation and Certification Committee did not meet this month.
